REPORT OF THE WORKSHOP CUM TRAINING PROGRAMME AT COLOMBO FROM 13TH SEPTEMBER, 2006 TO 3RD OCTOBER, 2006

 

 
The training cum workshop for the Senior lectures and teacher educators was conducted with an objective of creating resource persons in Second National Languages of Sri Lanka namely, Sinhala and Tamil at Colombo from 13th September to 3rd October, 2006 by National Institute of Education, Sri Lanka in collaboration with CIIL, Mysore. The other organizing body of this programme is Sri Lankan German Development Cooperation
 
The total programme was divided into two sections, namely,
 
  1. Theoretical expositions and discussions  during the forenoon sessions and
  2. Practicum during the afternoon sessions
Each day had 8 hours of work with one hour lunch break in the afternoon and tea break for 15 minutes duration both in the forenoon and afternoon
 
There were total 20 participants and five observers regularly attending the programme.  Their names and addresses are annexed herewith.

Practicum

During the afternoons extensive practical sessions were conducted.  The participants were divided into 5 groups and the following tasks were assigned

  • Format for the text book in Second National Language was finalized
  • Script system in both Tamil and Singala was grouped into several groups : 11 groups for Tamil and 14 groups for Sinhala, on the basis of similarities in their shapes.
  • The teacher trainees were asked to write script lessons with extensive exercises under each script lesson. At the end of the workshop the script lessons in both Tamil and Singala were finalized
 

A semantically classified vocabulary of having about 5000 word was planned. The formatting the presentation would be

 
  1. Tamil word – Roman transliteration – Sinhala word – Roman transliteration – English meaning.
  2. Sinhala word – R.T. – Tamil word – R.T. – English meaning.

The preparation has begun and will be completed in due course.

The five groups have prepared a list of eco-friendly topics for lessons,  comparative list of proverbs and idioms in Tamil and Sinhala, a syllabus, a list of language structures for the preparation of lessons.
