10-MONTH DIPLOMA IN LANGUAGE TRAINING PROGRAMME AT REGIONAL LANGUAGE CENTRES OF CENTRAL INSTITUTE OF INDIAN LANGUAGES

Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) was established by the Government of India to promote Indian languages on July 17, 1969 located at Mysuru. CIIL functions as a subordinate office for the Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education. In five decades of its existence, CIIL has emerged as a premier Institute for the development of all Indian languages. It is recognised within and outside the country for carrying out and supporting extensive research and publication on Indian languages. The Institute through its Seven Regional Language Centres situated in seven states including Karnataka, Odisha, Punjab, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Assam offers an innovative programme in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil,Telugu, Bengali, Maithili, Oriya, Santali, Dogri, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Gujarati, Konkani, Marathi, Sindhi, Urdu, Assamese, Bodo, Manipuri and Nepali with a goal of implementation of three language formula and thereby promote national integrity and social harmony.

Language education plays a facilitative role in mental development and knowledge production. Learning a second or a third language broadens our mental horizon, develops cognitive abilities and widens cross-cultural and cross-linguistic understanding. It supports multilingualism and contributes to the development of languages and cultures. The Central Institute of Indian Languages offers a unique opportunity for learning a second language. By choosing to learn a second language, one can make a positive contribution to national integration and promote intercultural understanding and cooperation. This 10-month Diploma in Language Training Programme is offered mainly to in-service, prospective teachers, research scholars and also to general public interested in developing a career in Indian languages.

Details of the course

10-Month Diploma in Language Training Programme is a full time Diploma course includes Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Course(s) for 14, 12 and 12 weeks respectively, with two weeks of language environment tour. There is 5.5 hours of instruction on each working day; thus the entire programme consists 1085 hours of effective language instruction to the trainees. Periodical tests and final examination are conducted at the end of each term. In the first stage of 14 weeks, all four skills, viz., listening, speaking, reading and writing are expected to be mastered by the trainees. The basic course has more emphasis on the spoken language so that at its end, the trainees can use the language for day-to-day purposes, converse with a native speaker of that language on matters of day-to-day requirements and start reading and writing. They can also read and understand newspaper captions. After the second stage of the Intermediate course, the trainees can read and write simple texts and operate with all complex sentence patterns in the language effectively as a tool of communication and write compositions in the language. They can read newspapers and simple books at the end of this stage. All the trainees are required to go a two-week language environment tour. This provides an intensive natural language environment for improvement of speaking, listening and understanding skills and direct interaction with the people and their social customs, beliefs and culture. During all these courses various devices are used for teaching, such as graded lessons on sentence patterns, various kinds of drills and pattern practices, laboratory exercises, audio-visual aids, conversation patterns, narration, comprehension practices, role-play, environmental learning, individual guidance, socio-cultural study of the State.

How to Apply for Diploma Course?

Applications are currently accepted for the Language Training Diploma Courses.

To apply, please go to the Online Application Submission Portal at https://apply.ciil.org and login to the portal. If you have not already registered, you may need to register on the portal first.
After the registration is done, you can find the application form under the link "10-Month Language Training Diploma 2024" on the home page itself. Clicking on the link after loggin in will take you to the application form which has different sections in it. Please fill up all the sectiosn required for your category, upload the documents required and finally make the payment using all the options available there.
Once the payment is done, your application is considered as submitted and you can download your application and other documents submitted by you.
Please note that you cannot edit your application once it is submitted
For In-Service Teachers, you may need to download the application and submit to the competent authority to get a forwarding letter issued. In-Service teachers may submit their forwarding letter offline also by sending it to "Assistant Director (Admin), Central Institute of Indian Languages, Manasangangothri Mysore - 570006 Karnataka"
